People of england- "drink driving?" what? that makes absolutely No sense...its DRUNK driving? |
People of england- "drink driving?" what? that makes absolutely No sense...its DRUNK driving? drink-driving makes NO sense and is retarded. think about it. drunk driving= driving while drunk drink driving= ...driving while drink??? it makes more sense to say you're driving while drunk than driving while drink. you see, you wouldnt use an adjective here, not a predicate
Answer (by Paul):
I don't usually criticise people's spelling and grammar but you opened the door.
First of all it's England not england, if you want to be part of the grammar police, you should learn the rules of capitalisation.
Secondly you capitalise words at the start of a sentence not in the middle of a sentence or wherever you feel like it.
You have used the possessive form of its where you should have used the contraction of it is. There are other errors but I'm not trying to criticise your spelling and grammar just reminding you of an old adage about glass houses and throwing stones.
Now the next thing you need to know is language evolves, idioms change over time. The phrase drink driving has evolved to be a shortened form of drinking and driving, which I think came from the government's commercials warning people not to drink and drive.
Are you telling me Americans don't rape the English language?
There are tons of American vulgarities, enough to make any English teacher cringe but don't forget one of the greatest wordsmiths of all time William Shakespeare created loads of previously unheard of idioms, and his much adored language style was one of the most vulgar of his day. Actually it was his ability to combine vulgarity with courtly English with incredibly skillful rhythm that made him so popular. That and the gripping content of his plays.
The point is that language evolves. I can't waste my life lamenting the adoption of the split infinitive into the English language. It's better to just relax and enjoy a good episode of Star Trek. Just remember if language didn't evolve we'd still be pressing reeds into clay to write in Cuneiform.
Just chill out sit back and objectively observe the evolution of language, from grammatical error or careless spelling mistake to counter culture to popular vulgarity to being adopted as formal rules of grammar to pretentious archaisms.

How long does a drink driving conviction stay on your record in the UK? |
I'm gonna be convicted of drink driving soon because i'm pleading guilty. i'm wondering how long it will be on my record, i'm 23 and have no other convictions, its a total mistake. What will it affect. I have a SIA licence, will I lose that, also what if I want to get a job that doesn't do CRB checks, and will it stop me going to uni in the future? thanks.

I've been done for drunk driving in the UK? Possible sentence? |
Yesterday evening I got stupid and drank a bottle of Smirnoff, two bottles of wine and maybe more, i don't really remember, i thought it would be a good idea to drive home and I drove past a red light and by absolute bad luck there happened to be a police van with four officers in it and they pulled me up. They instantly knew I was drunk and wanted to breathalise, I said no and I was arrested for failing to provide a breath specimen and resisting arrest, idk why I did that, i was scared of them they weren't being nice, although i understand why and everything. I was taken into custody, I spent 14 hours in a cell, I was forced to provide a breath specimen at the police station, which showed my alcohol limit at something like 3 or 4 times the limit (I've forgotten the reading) and I've been charged with drink driving and bailed to appear at magistrates court on Wednesday. I'm 23 years old, in my defence.. i have no previous convictions, i was depressed at the time, i wasn't speeding, just skipped a red light, and i am pleading guilty because i am guilty, i didn't bother contacting a solicitor, was just truthful with the police. What am i looking at? they haven't told me. ;/ I know i might lose my licence for a while thanks for the answers I have high tolerance for alcohol, thats why i was able to, i've been drinking since i was 15
Answer (by shortie):
There is no defence for drink driving. You may as well be drunk in control of a machine gun as drunk in control of a car - they're both as lethal and you're so lucky nobody innocent was hurt as a result of your idiocy. Imagine living with deaths on your conscience?
Look at the info below. You can lose your licence for up to 36 months, get points on your licence, get a custodial sentence and fined thousands of pounds. It's discretionary so depends on the magistrate on the day.

Attitudes to DUI/ drink driving in the US? |
It seems to me that in the UK getting caught doing it is a bigger deal than in America. Would you say the US has a more casual attitude to drink driving?
Answer (by gymmark):
Yes. DUI in the US is less serious than in most countries. They compensate for this by having a drinking age of 21. I think if they really wanted to stop drinking and driving they'd raise the consequences for doing so, not the age restriction to buy alcohol.
